GREENACRES ECLIPSE VIEWING COMMUNITY EVENT
|
Eclipse-Viewing Community Event
The 2024 solar eclipse is coming to Scarsdale and we would love to watch with you! Please join us and experience this amazing celestial event with classmates, neighbors and friends from our very own Greenacres School blacktop.
Date: Monday April 8, 2024
Time: 3pm onwards, feel free to join us directly after dismissal
Place: Greenacre Playground Blacktop (front)
Glasses: Bring your own!
Please note that it is unsafe to look directly at the sun without eclipse-specific eyewear.
This is a community event and is NOT a drop-off. Parents and/or caregivers are responsible for their children and for ensuring that they have the appropriate eye protection.
Please feel free to bring picnic blankets, chairs and/or snacks for your viewing comfort.
FAQs:
Q: When will the eclipse begin and end?
In Scarsdale, the partial eclipse will begin at 2:11pm and end at 4:37pm. Peak eclipse (~91% coverage) will occur at 3:25pm. Scarsdale is not on the path of totality.
Q: Do I really need sunglasses?
Yes. Except during the brief phase of a total solar eclipse, when the moon completely blocks the sun's bright face (also known as Totality), it is unsafe to look directly at the sun without specialized eye protection for solar viewing. The partial phases of the solar eclipse can only be safely observed directly with specialized solar viewing glasses ("eclipse glasses") or a handheld solar viewer. Regular sunglasses, polarized or otherwise, are not a safe replacement for solar eclipse glasses. Further information about safe viewing can be found on the American Astronomical Society website
Q. Where can I buy eclipse sunglasses?
The PTA is not liable or responsible for eye protection and we do not endorse any specific vendor or product. However, here are some examples that we found online that are ISO certified:
Option 1 - Family pack
Option 2 - Kids sized
Option 3 - Adult sized
Q. Does this mean ASC is canceled?
No, all ASC programming will run as planned on Monday, April 8. However, if you choose to view the eclipse with your child(ren), please inform the ASC chairs, Anita Srinivasan and Rowena Mancheril and please update the dismissal manager to reflect that they will not be attending ASC on Monday. Any children that will not be attending ASC for the eclipse must be picked up at regular 3:00pm dismissal. We ask that you do not plan to pick up your child during ASC for the eclipse-viewing as it will be disruptive to the students remaining at ASC. Any questions, please contact the ASC Chairs.
Q. Is there a rain date?
Sadly, No. ;-)

SAVE THE DATE for a Tour of the Countries in our Community!
Tuesday, April 16th, 5:00pm - 7:00pm
We are excited to bring back this annual event and invite you to take a trip through the different cultures and heritages represented in our Greenacres community.
Please sign up HERE to design a display and share a piece of your cultural background with our kids and families. If you volunteered last year, you are welcome to reuse your display if you choose.
Plans for our multicultural evening are in the works, but as before, we will feature display tables for many countries represented in our community. Children will be provided with their own “passports” where they will travel the world in one magical night. At each table, they will learn about each country, through language, clothing, arts and crafts, music, nature, geography or food. Tables may include light snacks and activities for kids. Dance and musical performances are planned throughout the evening as well!
Please contact Liza King or Esthela Lecuona with any questions pertaining to this event.

Eid Al-Fitr - April 9-10, 2024
Eid Al-Fitr Eid al-Fitr (eed əl FIT-ər) also called the "Festival of Breaking the Fast," is a religious holiday celebrated by Muslims around the world, marking the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting.
Observances, set according to the lunar Islamic calendar, vary based on when the new moon is sighted by local religious authorities, so the exact day of celebration varies by region.
In addition, the Islamic lunar calendar is not adjusted to correspond with the Gregorian calendar, so Islamic observances will occur at different times of the year. At the end of Ramadan, when Eid al-Fitr is celebrated, the typical greeting is "Eid Mubarak", meaning blessed celebration. In some countries, this holiday lasts for three days.
It is a joyous holiday, especially loved by children as they get new clothes, sweets and, most exciting of all, "Eidi" (money) as gifts from grownups.
There are special prayer services, and afterwards families and friends enjoy visiting each other and sharing meals and sweets together. Read more about Eid Al-Fitr on the District Website. For more information please click here.
